Author Duane Tudahl Joins What Did Prince Do This Week? for #PopLife40!
And that’s not all! We are extremely excited to announce a very special guest to an integrated segment of What the Prince Do This Week? on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at noon ET on Zoom Events. Duane Tudahl, author of the Prince Studio Sessions book series, will be joining us!
Duane Tudahl is a Grammy-nominated, award-winning author who has worked in entertainment for over thirty years and has produced and/or directed documentary programming for the History Channel, CBS, GTV, Fox, Discovery, Pax, the Gospel Music Channel, the Food Channel, Tru-TV, and HGTV, among others. He has also been an editor on multiple Emmy-nominated programs, including Intervention, and Unsolved Mysteries. He is a former stand-up comic and has been writing about Prince and the Minneapolis music scene for over 25 years. Prince and the Parade and Sign O’ The Times Era Studio Sessions: 1985 and 1986 is the second book in his series that chronicles Prince’s legacy in the recording studio.
Celebrating 40 years of Around The World In A Day & Romance 1600!
Eddie M. is one of the top saxophonists to emerge from the Bay Area, known for his authentic funk roots, dynamic stage presence, and soulful delivery. He has recorded and performed with Prince & The Revolution, Sheila E., Jill Jones, Beyoncé, Paula Abdul, and Stevie Nicks, Yolanda Adams, Wayman Tisdale, and Acoustic Alchemy. He was a member of the house band on The Magic Hour. Eddie’s solo releases include Hold Me (1997), Ward Street (1998), and Eddie M. (2001), which features Eric Benét and Karyn White.
Eddie M. laid down incredible saxophone parts on two tracks from Around the World in a Day, “The Ladder” and “Temptation,” and brought electrifying energy to the Purple Rain tour, often joining Prince and The Revolution on stage for “Baby, I’m a Star” and “Purple Rain.” He also shared the screen with Eric Leeds in the unforgettable video for “America,” an absolute standout from ATWIAD.
But that’s not all—Eddie M. is all over Sheila E.’s Romance 1600, performing on every track with the sole exception of “Yellow,” and helping to define the sound of beloved tracks like “A Love Bizarre” and “Dear Michaelangelo.”
Don’t miss this celebration of Eddie M.’s legacy and the musical magic he brought to Prince world.
Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of
The Family!
The Family, originally formed by Prince in 1985, is a groundbreaking band that blends funk, soul, and avant-garde pop. The group features all original five members: St. Paul Peterson (vocals/keyboard), Susannah Melvoin (vocals), Eric Leeds (saxophone), Jellybean Johnson (guitar), and Jerome Benton (percussion). Their self-titled debut album introduced the world to the original recording of the iconic ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U,” later popularized by Sinéad O’Connor.
Under their reimagined name, fDeluxe, original members Susannah Melvoin, St. Paul, Jellybean Johnson, and Eric Leeds carried forward the Minneapolis funk legacy while exploring fresh creative directions. The group continued to captivate audiences with their unique sound and dynamic performances, releasing new music that honored their roots while pushing artistic boundaries.
Today, The Family is reforming to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their iconic record. The band is gearing up to tour in April 2025, with performances in Europe alongside world-renowned saxophonist Candy Dulfer. They are also planning concerts all over the world. This highly anticipated tour promises to bring their timeless music to fans old and new, celebrating their enduring legacy.
On the last day of #PopLife40, Sunday, April 13, 2025, we will continue to celebrate The Family by having a roundtable discussion about The Family at 2:30-4pm ET. Then, we'll have some presentations about The Family, which will be our final panel of the symposium from 4:30-6:30pm ET. We hope that you'll join us to learn more about The Family after their opening keynote address on Friday.
What is What Did Prince Do This Week? #WDPDTW
Outside of this special #PopLife40 edition, we meet every Saturday at noon ET at youtube.com/@polishedsolid for What Did Prince Do This Week? (WDPDTW), an interactive, virtual book club where we read Duane Tudahl’s entire Prince Studio Sessions book series very slowly to explore Prince’s work ethic in real time—week by week, day by day.
Beyond a book club, it is also a Saturday salon, echoing the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance and inviting discussions that dive deep into every aspect of Prince’s purple world and music in general.
We began this journey in January 2023! Now in 2025, we are embarking on year three of What Did Prince Do This Week? by beginning Duane Tudahl’s second book in the series, Prince and the Parade and Sign O’ The Times Era Studio Sessions: 1985 and 1986.
It is a very, very slow read over the course of two years. Yes, it is a commitment, but we’ll read the 2nd book in very short, digestible, bite-sized chunks–just like we did with the first one, Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 and 1984 (Expanded Edition)!
Hope some of you will be committed, brave, and crazy enough to join us on this very LONG journey! Here’s the reading schedule.
Save the dates and have your purple family and friends pre-register for FREE here at poplife40.substack.com!
On April 11-13, 2025 (Fri-Sun), join us for the #PopLife40 *VIRTUAL* symposium to celebrate 40 years of Prince’s Around The World In A Day (ATWIAD), The Family, and Sheila E.’s Romance 1600, all of which Prince produced, arranged, composed, and performed with the assistance of some amazing musical collaborators!
ATWIAD is the bold and unexpected left-turn Prince took while still riding the wave of Purple Rain’s massive commercial success. This symposium will explore why he chose not to capitalize on that momentum with a “Purple Rain 2,” why the tour was cut short and never made it to Europe, and broader themes of race, gender, politics, and sexuality, as well as his impact on music, film, and fashion.
Over 3 days, there will be 40 speakers over 10 total sessions, featuring 13 presentations over 5 presentation panels, 3 lively roundtable discussions, an integrated segment of the weekly, What Did Prince Do This Week? webcast, and this special keynote.
Explore the schedule at a glance, speaker profiles, and more info on the symposium website at: poplife.polishedsolid.com
